Travertine vs. pavers: which is right for your OC project?

It's the most common hardscape question in Orange County. Short answer: travertine for pool decks and Mediterranean patios, concrete pavers for budget driveways. The details are below.

Choose travertine if…

  • It's a pool deck and you want light, comfortable, slip-resistant stone with matching coping.
  • Your home is Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Tuscan or coastal-luxury.
  • You value a natural material that won't fade and ages gracefully.
  • You're fine sealing every few years.

Choose concrete pavers if…

  • It's a driveway or a very large area on a budget.
  • You want a manufacturer warranty and consistent, easily matched replacements.
  • You need a permeable paver system for drainage.
  • You prefer a uniform or very modern look (large slab-style pavers).

Illustrative only, based on the per-square-foot ranges above. Demolition of an old deck, drainage, steps and HOA requirements change the numbers. Get two or three itemized bids.

Middle pathMany OC homeowners combine both: concrete pavers on the driveway and side yard, travertine on the pool deck and main patio where people walk barefoot and look closely.

Frequently asked questions

Is travertine more expensive than pavers?

Usually yes. Published 2026 OC pricing puts concrete pavers at roughly $15–$25 per square foot installed and travertine/natural stone at about $20–$45. On a 500 sq ft pool deck that's a difference of a few thousand dollars, often less than people expect.

Which is cooler around a pool, travertine or pavers?

Color matters most. Light travertine is typically more comfortable barefoot than mid- or dark-colored concrete pavers. Light-colored pavers narrow the gap. Avoid dark surfaces in sunny barefoot areas either way.

Which lasts longer?

Both can last decades on a proper base. Concrete pavers resist vehicle loads well and come with manufacturer warranties. Travertine needs sealing and gentle cleaning, but its color doesn't fade and it ages with patina.
